Gazing upon Plaza Las Cañitas today, it’s hard to imagine this vibrant hub as anything other than a bustling center of activity. But Plaza Las Cañitas whispers tales of a quieter past. Originally, this area was known as “El Camino de las Cañitas,” a name derived from a grand estate that stood between present-day Avenida Luis María Campos and Avenida del Libertador. This estate, also called Las Cañitas, existed until the early 20th century and lent its name to the road that eventually became Avenida Luis María Campos in 1914. The estate’s name, meaning “little reeds,” likely came from the reeds growing in the lowlands of the Maldonado Stream. Imagine this area, not as a plaza, but a tranquil expanse of pastureland used for training racehorses. The love of equestrian activities has always been strong in Buenos Aires, and the nearby racetrack became a cherished landmark. By the 1950s, a military base occupied the area, and families lived in former army housing. A hospital, a school, the Abbey of San Benito, a Catholic church, and luxurious private residences further distinguished the district, alongside surrounding parks and gardens. The continued presence of a military base contributes to Plaza Las Cañitas’ reputation as a safe and peaceful haven. The 1980s brought modernization with the construction of high-rise buildings amidst gardens and courtyards. While not officially a separate neighborhood, Plaza Las Cañitas sits within the boundaries of Palermo and Belgrano, two prominent traditional districts. From the 1990s, Plaza Las Cañitas transformed into a trendy gastronomic hub. Today, it boasts more restaurants than any other area in Buenos Aires, each offering a diverse array of culinary delights, many with inviting outdoor seating. A stroll through Plaza Las Cañitas reveals exclusive boutiques, leather shops, spas, wine and liquor stores, and antique shops, as well as the “El Solar de la Abadía” shopping center. A newly built public park now graces Plaza Las Cañitas, offering over 6700 square meters of green space. This welcome addition to the neighborhood provides a family-friendly environment and is expected to further enhance the area’s appeal.
