In 1999, students from Escuela de Educación Media 7 went on a graduation trip. One student jokingly threw another’s belonging into the Casa de Piedra stream. The stream flows into Lago Moreno. The classmate entered the water to retrieve it. He was swept away by the current.
Tragedy unfolded as more students and coordinators tried to help. Gustavo Guzmán was one of the coordinators. He had just started working for El Rápido. He was responsible for the group. In the end, five lives were lost in the icy waters. These were Claudio Villafañe. Matías Flores. César Rodríguez. Pablo Maidana.
The Plaza de los Héroes Egresados Yes marks this event. One year later, five small pine trees were planted in the plaza. They honored the students who gave their lives. A marble plaque was placed. It stated that they gave their lives for others.
