Gazing across the raw beauty of Playa del Viejo Rey, have you ever wondered about its name? It translates to “Beach of the Old King,” a title that whispers of ancient stories. Playa del Viejo Rey is located in the small town of La Pared on Fuerteventura’s west coast. La Pared itself is named after a wall that once divided the island into two kingdoms. This beach is a surfer’s paradise, attracting both seasoned wave riders and those just starting their surfing journey. The waves here are consistently strong, making swimming unsafe but perfect for those seeking an adrenaline rush on a board. The sand, a mixture of gold and dark hues, stretches over 800 meters, framed by rugged cliffs that add to the wild, untouched feel. Before the Spanish conquest, the area around Playa del Viejo Rey was a significant site for the Mahos, the indigenous people of Fuerteventura. Above the beach, you can still find remnants of their presence: gambuesas (ancient dwellings), shell middens, and small natural caves. Interestingly, Playa del Viejo Rey, along with the neighboring Playa La Pared, appeared on early maps from the late 16th century. These beaches, sometimes collectively called “Las Playas,” served as occasional landing points. For the best experience, visit Playa del Viejo Rey at low tide. High tide often covers much of the beach. Access to the beach is via stone steps from a nearby car park. Be mindful, there are no facilities directly on the beach. Bring your own refreshments and enjoy the unspoiled beauty of Playa del Viejo Rey. The sunset views here are particularly spectacular, painting the sky with vibrant colors as the sun dips below the horizon.
