Imagine a wall. Not just any wall, but La Pared. This village and its beach in Fuerteventura echo with tales of division and untamed beauty. We are standing on the western coast of the Jandía Peninsula. Before us stretches Playa de la Pared. It is a place where the island narrows. Costa Calma lies a mere 5km to the east. Yet, the contrast between the two is stark.

La Pared. The name itself means “the wall” in Spanish. It marks a boundary from long ago. Indigenous kings once ruled Maxorata and Jandia. This wall divided their kingdoms. Today, only remnants of that ancient barrier remain. But the name reminds us of the past.

Look around. Jagged volcanic mountains frame a dramatic scene. Dark blue waters churn restlessly. La Pared reveals Fuerteventura’s wild west coast. The beauty here is undeniable. However, swimming is not advised. Strong currents make these waters dangerous.

Yet, La Pared is a surfer’s haven. Schools offer lessons for those brave enough to ride the waves. The beach itself is split into two parts. The smaller section is Playa La Pared. Steps from the cliff top lead down to it. A spectacular lava arch can be seen on the way. The second beach is Playa de Viejo Rey. It lies to the south. It is accessible from Playa La Pared at low tide. Alternatively, a cliff-top path marked by large stones will lead you there.

Be aware. La Pared’s beaches lack facilities. There are no toilets, showers or lifeguards. Sun loungers are also absent. So, come prepared. Bring water and sunscreen. Access to the beaches is rocky. Uneven steps make it unsuitable for young children. The elderly and infirm should also take caution.

The village of La Pared has a weathered appearance. Salty air takes its toll. A lack of maintenance adds to the scruffiness. The entrance is a dirt road. Palm trees are untrimmed. Street lights are broken. Paving stones are missing.

But change is coming. The local council has taken charge of the public streets. Improvements are on the horizon. Despite its rough look, La Pared has its charms. A few cafes and restaurants offer refreshment. A mini-market provides essentials. Costa Calma is a short 7km drive away. It offers more amenities.

“La Pared powered by Las Playitas” is the only hotel here. It was formerly called “Bungalows Costa Real.” Stables nearby provide horse riding. This is a great way to explore the area. Sadly, the small Golf Academy is now abandoned.

The best time to visit Playa de la Pared is at sunset. The sun paints the sky with orange hues. It casts a golden glow on the rocks and sea. Fuerteventura has many sunset spots. La Pared is undoubtedly one of the most memorable. Remember to respect this raw landscape. Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. Protect the unique environment of Playa de la Pared for future generations.
