“A true hero, they called him,” a passerby muttered, adjusting his scarf against the Parisian chill. The man gestured towards the Plaque Commémorative René Roeckel, a simple yet powerful tribute on this quiet street. The Plaque Commémorative René Roeckel marks the life and sacrifice of a remarkable man, a hero of the French Resistance during World War II. René Roeckel, born in Alsace, found himself drawn into the heart of the fight against Nazi occupation. An unassuming man by day, working as a turner, he transformed into a courageous leader within the French Resistance under the codename “Rajac”. Roeckel rose through the ranks, becoming the military commander of the South Paris region and later, the Left Bank. Imagine him, navigating the shadowy streets of Nazi-occupied Paris, coordinating acts of sabotage and resistance with his band of 120 men. His bravery even led him to orchestrate the daring rescue of prisoners from Fresnes Prison, disguised in an enemy uniform. However, his courageous acts came to a tragic end on December 11th, 1943. René Roeckel was arrested at Antony station. His wife Armande and her brother Raymond were also apprehended. Despite facing a grim fate, Roeckel’s spirit remained unyielding. On March 24th, 1944, he was executed at Mont Valérien, defiantly singing “La Marseillaise” until his last breath. His story, commemorated by this plaque, serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom during those dark times.
