Plano West Senior High School opened in 1999, becoming the third senior high school in the Plano Independent School District. The school quickly made a name for itself, not just in academics, but also in the world of sports. Plano West Senior High School’s athletic teams, known as the Wolves, compete with fierce rivals like Plano Senior High School and Plano East Senior High School. The school boasts a wide range of sports, from baseball and basketball to football and soccer. Plano West Senior High School’s boys’ basketball team achieved national recognition in the 2014-2015 season. Ranked #5 in the United States, they clinched the 6A state championship with a dramatic buzzer-beater by D.J. Hogg. The team was packed with future Division I players, including Tyler Davis, Mickey Mitchell, and Soso Jamabo. The girls’ basketball team also has a history of success. Under coach Don Patterson, they secured the 2006 state championship and reached the state semi-finals in 2014. Beyond basketball, Plano West Senior High School excels in tennis, with 18 state tournament appearances and five championships. They dominated their district, winning 144 consecutive matches from the school’s founding until 2017. The school’s commitment to academics is equally impressive. Plano West Senior High School was ranked the 22nd best high school in the US and the #1 comprehensive high school in Texas in 2016. It also boasts a remarkable number of National Merit Semifinalists and students earning college credit. Plano West Senior High School’s success extends beyond sports and academics to music and debate as well. The Plano West Debate Team secured a national title in Congressional Debate in 2020. The school’s music program, a Grammy Signature School, features an award-winning chamber orchestra and a thriving jazz band program.
