This unique planetary path shrinks our solar system down to a manageable size. The scale is 1:495 million. This allows you to grasp the vast distances and size differences between the planets and our sun. The Planetenwanderweg transforms the abstract into a tangible experience. You begin your journey at the Orangerie. Atop its glass entrance sits the sun, a prominent beacon marking the start of your cosmic stroll. The tiny Mercury and Venus, both about the size of hazelnuts, await you near the edge of the Karlswiese. Earth, slightly larger, like a walnut, is your next stop. As you continue along the Karlsaue axis under the oak avenue, you’ll encounter Mars. And then, majestically perched atop the small temple on the Schwaneninsel in the Aueteich, is Jupiter, a golden sphere gleaming against the water’s edge. This representation of Jupiter at the Planetenwanderweg offers a unique perspective on its place within our solar system. Venture further, beyond the Karlsaue, to find Saturn and Uranus. For the dedicated cosmic traveler, Neptune lies even further afield, near the R1 cycle path in Guntershausen. The Planetenwanderweg was gradually realized between 1996 and 2021. It invites you to walk among the planets. It allows you to feel the vastness of space, right here in Kassel.
