Imagine shrinking our solar system to a walkable scale. Here, at the Planetenlehrpfad: Neptun in Bonn, that’s exactly what you get. The Bonner Planetenweg is a project of the Bertolt-Brecht-Gesamtschule.
The Planetenlehrpfad: Neptun marks a significant point in this scaled-down solar system. The entire path stretches almost six kilometers. It represents the planets and Pluto at a scale of one to one billion.
This means every step here represents a million steps in space. The Planetenlehrpfad was inaugurated in September 2002. This was after two years of preparation. Students from the Bertolt-Brecht-Gesamtschule played a crucial role. They collaborated with local businesses and the Marburg School for the Blind.
Each planet along the Planetenlehrpfad has a bronze plaque. These plaques offer information about each planet. The information is also available in Braille. This makes the solar system accessible to everyone.
Our journey began near the old waterworks with a model of the sun. It’s a 1.5-meter sphere. As we walked, the distances between the planets became clear. The earth is only 150 meters from the sun. Saturn is much further.
The Planetenlehrpfad: Neptun lies 4497 meters from the sun. This gives you a sense of the vast distances in our solar system. The nearest star, Proxima Centauri, would be an Earth-circumference away at this scale.
The idea for the Planetenlehrpfad came from the Bertolt-Brecht-Gesamtschule. In 2000, a class and their teacher, Till Habel-Thomé, took on the challenge. They wanted to create a to-scale model of our solar system. The city provided the space. Local businesses helped make the bronze plaques.
The Planetenlehrpfad: Neptun isn’t just a model. It is a testament to education and community. It shows how we can understand the cosmos. The Planetenlehrpfad stretches from the Bundesviertel to Graurheindorf. It ends with Pluto near the Graurheindorfer harbor.
