Winston Churchill. The name echoes with statesmanship. It also resonates with a passion for art. Churchill was a Francophile. He loved his trips to the Côte d’Azur. He often stayed as long as possible.

Churchill’s connection to France goes way back. His parents married in Paris. Later in life, he found solace in the French landscape. He captured its beauty on canvas. He painted roughly 150 paintings of the South of France.

Imagine Churchill standing before an easel. The warm sun kisses his face. The scent of lavender fills the air. He’s not just a politician. He is an artist lost in his craft.

Paul Rafferty sought out the places Churchill painted. He found many iconic locations in Provence. Rafferty’s journey became a book. It is filled with photos and stories.

Churchill painted quickly. He completed a canvas in about ninety minutes. He was bold. He did not avoid challenges. Lady Churchill sometimes tried to take canvases. She thought they were done. Winston did not like that. He tended to overwork a canvas.

Churchill loved color. He put all the colors of the rainbow on his palette. Sometimes his colors were too bright. His wife Clementine encouraged him to cool his palette.

Churchill’s travels were grand. He had valets and bodyguards. He also had secretaries. He had all kinds of equipment to write and paint. Once, he tried traveling without his valet. He wanted to save money. His hostess, Maxine Elliott, found it brave.

Churchill painted one canvas during the Second World War. He gifted it to President Roosevelt. It was painted in Marrakech. Churchill was serious about his art. It was an escape from his busy life. Painting relaxed him. He focused only on his subject. He even had to be coaxed to lunch or dinner.

Churchill visited Mougins and painted Notre Dame de Vie. Later Pablo Picasso bought the house next door. Picasso loved the Mas. It became his home until his death.

Churchill often painted in the afternoon light. It was probably after lunch. Finding the exact spot was important to Rafferty. He used laminated reproductions. They were the size of postcards. He wanted to line up all the elements.

One photograph revealed Churchill holding a painting. It was of St Paul de Vence. This photo reversed a decision. It had been made on a TV show. The painting is now in the Churchill collection.

Even though Churchill called his paintings “daubs”, he was serious about his work. He found painting a means of relaxation. It was a passion above all others. He was absorbed while painting. Time passed quickly.

Place Winston Churchill stands as a reminder. It speaks of a leader’s hidden passion. He captured the soul of France on canvas. His legacy continues to inspire. It is a bridge between nations.
