Tony de Graaff a name whispered through the years. This unassuming square in Paris holds a secret. A secret of bravery resilience and unwavering dedication. Place Tony de Graaff isn’t marked by grand monuments. Its quiet dignity speaks volumes. It’s a tribute to a man who defied the Nazis. A man whose life intertwined with the fate of France.

Tony de Graaff born in Paris in August 1916. He wasn’t just another Parisian. He was a resistor. A member of the French Resistance during World War II. His family were Jewish bankers of Dutch origin. Tony worked in their bank. But his life took a different turn.

He joined the army as a volunteer in 1937. He served at the Saint-Cyr-l’École air base. His commanding officer was Henri Manhes a friend of Jean Moulin. When the war broke out Tony helped save 1900 cars from the base. He sabotaged military equipment and destroyed fuel reserves. These courageous acts earned him the Croix de Guerre with palm and two stars.

After the armistice Tony connected with the French Resistance. He joined Compagnons de France using his position as a cover. He played an active role in the Clermont-Ferrand demonstration. He then moved to Lyon to be with his family.

Tony’s work for the Resistance continued. He was connected to Jean Moulin. He acted as a liaison transporting vital information and funds between the occupied and unoccupied zones of France. He even hosted Moulin in Lyon. He helped his father convert dollars and pounds into francs for the Resistance.

In 1943 Jean Moulin expanded his mission to the north of France. Tony de Graaff took over Moulin’s role in Lyon heading the Resistance network in the southern zone. This meant working completely undercover a huge risk. He lived with his wife in Lyon.

After the Caluire arrests a significant blow to the Resistance Tony went underground. He maintained his position but his life was in danger. A 50000 franc bounty was placed on his head.

His colleagues convinced him to flee to Britain. In 1944 he was flown to England from a makeshift airfield near Macon. He then worked for the BCRA. He was parachuted into France three times. He even played a vital role in the liberation of Bayeux. He was among the first officers to enter the town.

Later he was made head of mission at the Ministry of Prisoners Deportees and Repatriates. He helped bring back almost eight million Allied prisoners and deportees. This was a massive undertaking. He achieved this in just 90 days an incredible feat.

After the war Tony represented French aeronautical industries in London for 18 years. He worked for several companies. He also helped create Matra. In 1975 he co-founded the humanitarian organization Hospitals Without Borders. He became its president. Under his leadership hundreds of hospitals were set up worldwide.

Tony de Graaff died in December 1989 at the age of 73. He received full military honors. He was awarded the Legion of Honor the Croix de Guerre and the Resistance Medal. Place Tony de Graaff a small square a silent testament to an extraordinary life. A life dedicated to France’s freedom. A legacy etched not in stone but in the hearts of those who remember.
