Didn’t Simone Veil leave an indelible mark on France and Europe? Here at Place Simone Veil, we remember a woman of incredible courage and conviction. This place commemorates her life and achievements. It’s a fitting tribute to a figure who shaped modern France.

Place Simone Veil is more than just a location. It is a symbol of progress and equality. Simone Veil was a celebrated civil servant and a champion for women’s rights. She survived the Holocaust.

Veil was born Simone Jacob in Nice in 1927. As a teenager, she was arrested by the Gestapo. She was deported to Auschwitz. She survived the horrors of Nazi concentration camps. Her father, mother, and brother perished. Simone and her sisters were reunited after the war.

After the war, Veil pursued a law degree. She became a magistrate in 1954. She dedicated her life to public service.

Veil’s most significant achievement was the Loi Veil. This law legalized abortion in France in 1975. As Minister of Health, she fought tirelessly for this reform. She faced fierce opposition and endured personal attacks. Many attacks were anti-Semitic. Despite the challenges, the law passed. It gave French women control over their reproductive rights.

Her work extended beyond women’s rights. She advocated for disability rights. She supported the rights of people living with HIV.

From 1979 to 1993, Veil served as a Member of the European Parliament. She was the first woman to be elected President of the European Parliament. She championed European integration. She believed in a stronger and more just European Union.

France recognized Simone Veil’s contributions. She received the Legion d’Honneur in 2016. After her death in 2017, she was interred in the Panthéon. She is one of only five women to receive this honor.

The Place Simone Veil is located in the 8th arrondissement. It sits at the intersection of several streets. These streets bear the names of European capitals. These are Constantinople, Madrid, Vienna, London, Liège, and Saint Petersburg. This location highlights Veil’s commitment to Europe.

The nearby metro station “Europe” was renamed “Europe-Simone Veil”. This makes her one of the few women honored with a metro station named after her. She joins Louise Michel, Marie Curie, and Marguerite Rochechouart.

Simone Veil’s life embodies resilience. She stood for justice and equality. This place serves as a reminder of her legacy. It encourages us to continue her fight for a better world. Her story reminds us that even in the face of adversity, one person can make a difference. The Place Simone Veil stands as a testament to her enduring impact on French society and beyond. It’s a place for reflection. It inspires action.
