From a simple cross amidst vineyards, Place Saint-Eugène in Marseille blossomed. It’s hard to imagine this bustling square as anything other than what it is now. But in the 19th century, this area looked quite different. A humble cross stood on a small hill, surrounded by rows of grapevines. This simple marker gave the area its first name: Place de la Croix. Place Saint-Eugène, as we know it today, takes its name from the prominent figure, Saint Eugène de Mazenod. He was the Bishop of Marseille from 1837 to 1861. He also founded the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The warm, inviting glow of the nearby Saint Eugène d’Endoume Church further connects this place to its namesake. The church, with its Provençal style palette of warm colors in the stained glass, walls, and organ, stands just a short walk from the square. It’s a vibrant and active part of the community, with mass held every Sunday at 9:30 am. The church is part of the Roucas Blanc parish, along with Saint-Antoine de Padoue. It’s currently administered by Father Xavier Manzano. A fascinating piece of literary history also graces this neighborhood. A plaque on Tolstoy street, not far from Place Saint-Eugène, commemorates a visit by Leo Tolstoy in 1861. He visited local Marseille schools. This plaque serves as a small reminder of the unexpected connections that can be found in a place like Marseille. The cross that once marked this place was moved in 1910 to the front of the church. Unfortunately, it didn’t withstand the elements. But its memory, and the evolution of the Place de la Croix into Place Saint-Eugène, provides a glimpse into the ever-changing landscape of this vibrant city. Place Saint-Eugène stands as a testament to growth, transformation, and the enduring legacy of those who shaped Marseille’s history.
