“Lâchez tout!”, a voice boomed across Place Neptune. On that crisp morning of September 23, 1870, all eyes were fixed on the magnificent sight before them: a giant balloon, the Le Neptune, straining at its ropes. Paris, under siege by Prussian forces, looked to the skies for hope. The Le Neptune, named after the Roman god of the sea, was no ordinary balloon. It carried on its round belly the weight of a city’s hopes: 125 kilograms of official dispatches, newspapers, and letters. Its destination: the Chateau de Cracouville, beyond enemy lines. The pilot, Duruof, a man who knew the craft like the back of his hand, gave a nod. The ropes were released. Le Neptune soared into the sky, marking a pivotal moment in history: the world’s first airmail flight. Little did the cheering crowds at Place Neptune know that this was just the beginning. Over 65 balloons would follow in Le Neptune’s wake, carrying millions of letters and weaving tales of daring escapes and near captures. Place Neptune. A silent witness to the birth of airmail. A symbol of resilience and ingenuity in the face of adversity. A reminder that even in the darkest of times, hope can take flight.
