Once, right here at Place Louise-Losserand, stood ordinary apartment buildings. Today, this tranquil green space honors a woman of extraordinary courage, Louise Losserand. Born Louise Marié in 1904, her life became deeply intertwined with the political turmoil of the 20th century. Place Louise-Losserand isn’t just a park. It stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of a woman who, alongside her husband Raymond Losserand, embraced the ideals of communism. Raymond’s political ascent saw him become a Municipal Councillor in 1938, their home near this very spot, a hub for their political activities. Their lives took a dramatic turn during the Nazi occupation of France. Driven by their beliefs, Raymond and Louise became active members of the French Resistance. Raymond rose to prominence, leading the military arm of the Resistance in the Parisian region.

Louise, a skilled seamstress and mechanic, utilized her skills to support the movement, serving as a vital liaison agent. However, their clandestine activities were eventually discovered by the Gestapo. Their shared commitment to freedom came at a heavy price. Raymond was arrested, condemned, and tragically executed by the Nazi regime. Louise, enduring the unimaginable, was deported to Auschwitz, then Ravensbrück, and finally Mauthausen. Despite these horrors, she returned to Paris on April 30th, 1945, bearing the indelible marks of her experience.

The Place Louise-Losserand, named in her honor, is a quiet reminder of her resilience. It’s a place where the echoes of history whisper tales of courage, sacrifice, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Her legacy lives on, not just in the name of this square, but in the hearts of those who remember her unwavering fight for freedom and justice.
