Wasn’t Henri Bergson a brilliant mind? Place Henri Bergson in the 8th arrondissement of Paris whispers his legacy. This rectangular place bordered by Rue de Laborde and Avenue Cesar-Caire holds a fascinating history. It wasn’t always Place Henri Bergson.

Originally it was a neglected area. Called the “Petite Pologne” it was known for a bustling tavern. The streets were unpaved. They were dark and dangerous. Beggars and vagrants roamed freely. Imagine the stark contrast to the elegant Paris we know today.

In 1816 the area’s alignment was officially determined. It was then surrounded by Rue de la Voirie Rue Maison-Neuve and Rue des Gresillons. In 1837 it was renamed Place de Laborde honoring Alexandre de Laborde a prefect of the Seine. A lively market opened in 1852 aiming to provide affordable food for the poor.

The creation of Avenue Cesar-Caire in 1859 changed the area’s layout. A square was planned. A fountain was moved to the square’s center. By 1861 grand buildings were going up. The area began its transformation from a slum to a stylish district. A small chapel was replaced by the crypt of Saint-Augustin church.

In 1900 there were plans to remove the square. Citizens protested. They valued the green space in this densely populated area. They loved the square. It was a place of respite a place for children.

A statue of writer Paul Deroulede was inaugurated in 1927. It was damaged. It was replaced by a bronze statue. Even this statue was later melted down during the German occupation. A bronze copy stands there today.

Finally in 1946 the place was given its current name. It honors the philosopher Henri Bergson who was born and died in Paris. A parking garage was built beneath the square. The fountain now serves as a flower bed.

Place Henri Bergson stands as a testament to urban renewal. It reflects a rich past. It is a meeting place between Paris’ elegant present and its sometimes-rough past. Take a moment to reflect on its transformation. This quiet square holds the echoes of a remarkable history.
