“A writer’s name on a square?” you might ask. This is the Square Émile Zola. It is a tribute to a man who stirred France with his words.

Square Émile Zola is located in the 15th arrondissement of Paris. The square starts at 87 bis, avenue Émile-Zola and ends in a dead end. It was created and named in 1927. The square is named after the French writer Émile Zola. He was born and died in Paris.

Émile Zola was a prolific French writer. He lived during the 19th century. Zola’s name is linked to a significant event in French history. It is the Dreyfus Affair. Captain Alfred Dreyfus was wrongly accused of treason. Émile Zola bravely defended him.

In 1898 Zola wrote “J’accuse”. It was a letter to the French President. He accused high-ranking officials of injustice. This letter was published in the newspaper “L’Aurore”. It was edited by Georges Clemenceau. The publication of “J’accuse” shook France. It divided society.

Zola’s actions had consequences. He was convicted of libel. Zola had to flee to England for a time. His intervention however helped to reveal the truth. Dreyfus was eventually exonerated. Émile Zola became a symbol of justice and truth.

An avenue bears his name. It is the Avenue Émile Zola. This avenue is in the 15th arrondissement. A Metro station is also named after him. It is on line 10 of the Paris Métro. The station is at the eastern end of the avenue.

The Avenue Émile Zola was formerly named Rue Frémicourt. In 1907 the Paris Town Council renamed it. They honored Émile Zola. This was just five years after his death. The decision reflected a shift in political power. A left-wing majority now controlled the council.

Émile Zola’s influence extended beyond literature and justice. For a few years, No. 146 housed a Mutual Aid. It was a lingerie and fashion cooperative. It was founded by Gabrielle Duchêne. She was a feminist and trade unionist. Duchêne became politicized by the Dreyfus Affair.

Zola lived in several places in Paris. He moved frequently when he first arrived. He studied for a science diploma. Later he worked at the Hachette bookshop. He eventually became a famous writer.

Émile Zola died in 1902. His death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning. It was allegedly from a faulty heater. Despite his untimely death his legacy lives on. He has three plaques in Paris. An avenue and a square also bear his name.

Square Émile Zola may be small. But it represents a giant of French literature. It reminds us of his courage. It honors his fight for justice. As you stand here reflect on the power of words. Consider the impact one person can have.
