Was it destiny that led Claude Monet to create his water lily masterpieces for Place de l’Orangerie? Originally intended for another museum, the Place de l’Orangerie became their home thanks to Georges Clemenceau. He was a close friend of Monet and instrumental in ensuring the paintings found a perfect home. The Place de l’Orangerie, a former winter shelter for orange trees, wasn’t always an art haven. Constructed in 1852 for Emperor Napoleon III, its south-facing glass facade bathed the trees in sunlight.

After World War I, the Place de l’Orangerie transformed into an exhibition space for living artists. This change paved the way for Clemenceau to suggest it as the ideal location for Monet’s Water Lilies. The donation, formalized in 1922, led to the creation of two oval rooms. Designed by Monet and architect Camille Lefèvre, these rooms house eight panels, each over six feet high and spanning a breathtaking 298 feet.

The Place de l’Orangerie opened its doors to the public in 1927, a testament to Monet’s vision of art bathed in natural light. The sunlight filtering through the ceiling immerses the viewer in the serene beauty of the water lilies, just as Monet intended. Today, the Place de l’Orangerie stands not just as a museum, but as a symbol of peace and artistic brilliance. It reminds us of the power of art to transcend time, transforming a simple orange tree shelter into a haven of breathtaking beauty.
