Thousands of names lie beneath this sundial. This is the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden. It’s more than just a pretty place. It’s a testament to the women who shaped Victoria.

The Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden honours Victorian pioneer women. It was dedicated in 1934. This was the 100th anniversary of Victoria’s founding. The Women’s Centenary Council raised funds. They sold commemorative books and ‘sheets of remembrance’. For a shilling anyone could inscribe a name. Thousands of names were collected. They are buried under the sundial here.

The garden itself is a work of art. Hugh Linaker designed it. It’s formal and symmetrical. A watercourse flows in a cross shape. It leads to a grotto. Inside is a bronze statue of a woman. Charles Web Gilbert sculpted it. The Public Works Department built the garden. The project was part of the Unemployment Relief Program during the Depression.

Two bronze plaques were unveiled in 1935. Lady Huntingfield and Mrs I H Moss unveiled them. Lady Huntingfield was the Governor’s wife. Mrs Moss was the Women’s Centenary Council president. The garden was a success. It gave recognition to the often-overlooked contributions of pioneer women.

This seemingly simple garden tells a powerful story. It speaks of resilience and remembrance. It’s a quiet tribute to those who built a new life in a harsh land. Take a moment. Reflect on their strength. The Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden is a place of quiet contemplation and profound historical significance.
