Step inside the Pioneer Log Cabin. Feel the weight of history. This charming structure in Golden Gate Park isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to San Francisco’s pioneering women.

Built in 1911 the Pioneer Log Cabin stands as a replacement for a previous meeting place. That original spot sadly succumbed to the Great San Francisco Earthquake and fire of 1906. This cabin was a labor of love. Anne McIntyre the association’s president spearheaded its construction. Redwood logs journeyed all the way from Mendocino County. They formed the heart of this iconic structure.

The interior boasts a rustic fireplace. Originally it housed relics of California’s past. Furnishings crossed the plains or rounded Cape Horn to find a home here. Imagine a chandelier illuminating artifacts. A black and white photograph captures that bygone era. Termite damage necessitated renovations. New logs from the Sierra replaced decaying wood. The restoration was painstaking. They carefully preserved the exposed bark.

From 1998 to 2020 the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department used the cabin. Their permit and reservations office operated here. Since the pandemic’s start the cabin has stood mostly empty. Now it’s ready to welcome you. It will host private events once more. This hidden gem of Golden Gate Park awaits. It’s a chance to experience a piece of San Francisco history firsthand.

The Pioneer Log Cabin’s story is one of resilience. It’s a story of women who shaped California. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of San Francisco. So step inside. Let the Pioneer Log Cabin transport you to a different time. A time of pioneering women and enduring redwood. A time of California’s rich history.
