How about a journey back in time? We are standing before Pioneer Hall in Seattle. This historic building whispers tales of early settlers and their enduring legacy.

Pioneer Hall, erected in 1910, stands as a testament to Seattle’s pioneering spirit. It is located in the Madison Park neighborhood. The hall sits on land once owned by Judge John J. McGilvra and his wife. Sarah Loretta Denny, of the Denny family, provided the funding. Her donation of $20,000 ensured its construction. There was one condition. Pioneer Hall would memorialize the early pioneer families.

Imagine the scene in 1910. The city was growing rapidly. Pioneer Hall became a hub for those who shaped its early days. The Pioneer Association of the State of Washington, founded in 1883, found a permanent home here. They later merged with the King County Pioneer Association, which had been around since 1871.

Step inside Pioneer Hall. You would find a treasure trove of artifacts and portraits. These items tell the stories of the non-indigenous people who settled Washington Territory before 1890. The hall also houses a genealogical database and library. This helps preserve the memories of these early families.

Note the architecture of Pioneer Hall. The two-story red brick building sits gracefully on a hillside. Its concrete foundation peeks out on the north side due to the slope. Three large arches adorn the first floor. Fanlights sit above the wood-framed windows. The entry features double-leaf glass and wood doors. The second floor has paired double-hung windows. A stepped parapet with metal coping crowns the facade.

Consider the details. A pronounced dentilled cornice adds elegance. A heavy belt course runs between the two stories. A simple wooden sign declares “Washington Pioneer Hall”. The south elevation underwent changes. Marblecrete covers the original brick. Aluminum sash replaced the original windows.

Pioneer Hall earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places on June 5, 1970. For over a century, Pioneer Hall has served its intended purpose. It has provided a meeting place. The Pioneer Association and similar groups gather here. They preserve the memories of Washington’s early pioneers.

Today, Pioneer Hall continues to welcome visitors. The Pioneer Association hosts open houses. These are from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month. There are also open houses on the fourth Sunday of March through October. Volunteers share stories of the past. They show artifacts and portraits. It is a doorway to Washington State’s past. Pioneer Hall stands as a reminder of the courage and determination of those who built this city. Their stories live on within these walls.
