Whispers of history linger here at Pine Lake. This tranquil haven in San Francisco’s southwest corner wasn’t always so peaceful. Once known as Laguna Puerca or Pig Lake its story stretches back to 1847. The Greene family pioneers from Maine purchased the land surrounding this very lake. They found fertile grazing and farming opportunities.

Pine Lake wasn’t just a pretty face. It held a deeper significance. Fed by the same aquifer as nearby Lake Merced it’s one of San Francisco’s few natural freshwater lakes. Imagine the Greenes witnessing the migratory birds flocking here along the Pacific Flyway. They planted the eucalyptus trees that still shade its banks. These trees silently guard centuries of stories.

The lake’s name changed. It reflects San Francisco’s evolution. From Pig Lake to Pine Lake it’s a testament to the city’s transformation. The city acquired the lake five years after acquiring Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove. That’s quite a bit of land acquisition!

The surrounding wetlands including willows and tules created a haven for wildlife. Birds rested and nested here during their long journeys. The trail that encircles Pine Lake offers a chance to see them. You can connect to other trails that weave through Stern Grove. This quiet lake plays a significant role in the vast Bay Area Ridge Trail network.

Think about it. For almost two hundred years Pine Lake has existed. It reflects the city’s past present and future. The water’s gentle lapping the birds’ songs the rustling leaves. All of this makes Pine Lake a special place. A sanctuary. A historical landmark right here in the heart of San Francisco.
