He dedicated his life to serving the Portuguese Crown. The Pina Manique Statue stands as a testament to a man who shaped Lisbon’s social and cultural landscape. Diogo Inácio de Pina Manique was born in Lisbon in 1733. He rose to prominence during the reigns of King Joseph I and Queen Maria I. Pina Manique held numerous important positions. He was a judge, a magistrate, and eventually, the Intendente-Geral da Polícia, essentially the chief of police of Portugal. As Intendente-Geral, Pina Manique was a man of action. He introduced Lisbon’s first street lighting system. This was a major step forward for the city, improving safety and transforming its nocturnal atmosphere. But perhaps his most enduring legacy is the establishment of the Real Casa Pia de Lisboa. Founded in 1781, the Casa Pia was a groundbreaking institution. It provided shelter, education, and opportunities for Lisbon’s underprivileged children. Pina Manique’s vision was to reform society by providing for its most vulnerable members. He believed that everyone deserved a chance to contribute. The Pina Manique Statue is a reminder of his dedication to justice and social welfare.
