Did Fernão Cabral ever imagine his legacy? Right here, before you, stands the Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao de Marvila. It began in 1660 as a gift, a quinta donated by Cabral, Archdeacon of Lisbon Cathedral. His vision? A sanctuary for the Brigidine nuns, fleeing religious persecution in England. The Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao de Marvila wasn’t simply built; it evolved. The first stones were laid in 1651, under the watchful eye of Abbess Madre Brígida de Santo António. The official consecration took place on March 19, 1660. But the work continued, finally concluding in 1680. The Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao de Marvila also benefited from the patronage of D. Isabel Henriques. She not only contributed financially but also found solace within its walls, choosing to live out her days here. The earthquake of 1755 wreaked havoc on Lisbon, and the Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao de Marvila suffered too. Yet, it persevered. Remarkably, the chapel ceilings survived, preserving a glimpse into the pre-earthquake world and the beauty of Portuguese Baroque. A curious detail: Within these walls, nuns crafted “Pastéis de ovos de Marvila,” egg tarts so exquisite they graced the royal tables at Queluz Palace. The Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao de Marvila’s story didn’t end with the extinction of religious orders in 1834. The nuns remained until 1872. The chapel closed briefly in 1873. The building then transformed, serving as an asylum and later as Mansão de Santa Maria de Marvila, a care institution. The chapel reopened for worship in 1932. It fell under the jurisdiction of Olivais until 1959, when the Parish of Santo Agostinho de Marvila was established. So, as you stand before the Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao de Marvila, remember its journey. From convent to parish church, it stands as a testament to resilience, adaptation, and a touch of sweetness.
