Over 230 years old she stands. The Pillnitzer Kamelie a majestic Camellia japonica. This is no ordinary tree. It’s one of Europe’s oldest camellias. Legend whispers of its journey. Carl Peter Thunberg supposedly brought it from Kyoto to Kew Gardens in 1776. But that story is now questioned. Regardless of its origin the Pillnitzer Kamelie found its home in Dresden in 1801. Court Gardener Terscheck planted it here in the park surrounding Pillnitz Castle.

The Pillnitzer Kamelie is a marvel. It stretches 8.9 meters high. From February to April thousands of carmine flowers bloom. Up to 35000 blossoms adorn its branches a breathtaking sight. Imagine the scene. A riot of color. A fragrant perfume filling the air. The camellia’s beauty attracted much attention. It’s a symbol of Pillnitz Castle and its rich history.

The Pillnitzer Kamelie has faced hardship. In 1905 a fire engulfed its protective house. The temperature outside plunged to -20 degrees Celsius. The water froze solid around the tree. Yet the resilient plant survived. It bloomed the following spring a testament to its strength.

Today a new protective house shields the Pillnitzer Kamelie. It’s a high-tech marvel. This structure weighs 54 tonnes. Its height is 13.2 meters. It controls temperature humidity and shading. During warmer months it moves aside. The camellia can then enjoy the sun. The Pillnitzer Kamelie’s journey reflects resilience. It’s a symbol of survival and beauty. A living testament to the past. A remarkable plant that deserves our admiration. Its story intertwines with that of Pillnitz Castle and the history of Dresden.
