Have you ever imagined a village untouched by time? Welcome to Pilisborosjeno a hidden gem nestled in the Budapest metropolitan area. Pilisborosjeno boasts a rich history stretching back to the Ice Age. The Macko cave near its northwest border sheltered Ice Age inhabitants. Archaeologists unearthed artifacts from the Bronze Age Roman times and the Arpad era. A Roman road once connected Pilisborosjeno to Aquincum at the foot of Nagy-Kevely mountain.

For almost three hundred years Avars roamed this land. They followed the Danube crossings and western roads just like their predecessors. An Avar cemetery discovered near a current brick factory confirms their presence in Pilisborosjeno. The Jenő tribe conquered the area during the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin. Pilisborosjeno then became the private property of various families.

The earliest written record of Pilisborosjeno dates back to 1284. It was listed as Burusjenew. Viticulture thrived. The Paulines owned the village in 1351 followed by Dominican nuns in 1357. In the 1490s Pilisborosjeno was part of the Solymar fortress. The Turkish conquest completely depopulated it.

After the Turks retreated Germans repopulated Borosjeno. It belonged to the treasury and then the Poor Clare nuns of Buda. In the first half of the 17th century Bornemissza Pál Bolgár owned it. Later Barnabas Muslay a Hungarian knight from Komárom took over. The 1695 census recorded it as Weindorf. In 1800 Palatine József acquired Pilisborosjeno along with Üröm and Piliscsaba. The village gained its current name Pilisborosjeno in the second half of the 19th century.

Winemaking and dairy farming were vital to the village economy. The German settlers were known for their hard work and strong faith. Pilisborosjeno became a pilgrimage site. After World War II 90% of the population was exchanged for Hungarian families from Slovakia and Transylvania.

Today this village with German roots is part of the Danube-Ipoly National Park. It is part of the Budapest agglomeration. Despite the 19th-century exodus from Budapest Pilisborosjeno’s population slowly increased. Its unique history blends ancient past with modern life. Pilisborosjeno continues to thrive a testament to its resilient people. The spirit of Pilisborosjeno lives on. The echoes of history resonate through its streets. Isn’t it a remarkable story?
