Founded in 1928 Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Its story began humbly at the home of Deacon and Sister Aaron Shinairel. A small group gathered there with Pastor Will Jones their first leader. Mother Millie Parker suggested the name Pilgrim Rest a fitting title for this nascent community.

Early days were marked by challenges. A mysterious fire destroyed their first location on Hermitage Avenue. Under the leadership of successive pastors the church moved from place to place. Membership fluctuated. A period of decline even threatened a merger with another church. Deacon Will Gore however convinced the remaining ten members to persevere. They gathered for prayer without a choir or pastor.

Then came Pastor Matthew Thomas. He answered God’s call in 1937. He initially served without a salary. His dedication proved transformative. Membership soared under his 50-year tenure. The church secured larger and better locations. They even raised $25000 for a new building in 1941 a remarkable feat in those times.

Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church thrived on West Washington Boulevard. Its growth continued until 1985. Pastor Thomas’s passing in 1987 marked a turning point. The church sought new leadership. Pastor M C Russell and later Dr Al Lloyd guided the congregation. They faced gentrification. The community changed. Many members relocated to the suburbs.

Pastor Lloyd focused on service and discipleship. He introduced new ministries and a website. Pilgrim Rest continued serving its community providing food and clothing. Improvements like new windows and a sign marked continued progress. The church’s story isn’t just about buildings. It’s about enduring faith community and service. Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church has always adapted to challenging times. This church demonstrates the unwavering spirit of its members. It’s a story of hope and resilience. It’s a story of faith that continues to inspire.
