What did ancient people worship here? We’re standing in front of the Pierre Turquaise. It’s a testament to a time long past, a fascinating glimpse into the lives and beliefs of the Neolithic people who once inhabited this region. The Pierre Turquaise, also known as the Turquoise Stone, isn’t just any rock formation. It’s a megalithic passage grave dating back to the Seine-Oise-Marne culture. This culture flourished here from around 3100 to 2000 BC. Just imagine, for millennia, this structure has stood here. It has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the transformation of the landscape, and the evolution of human civilization. The Pierre Turquaise is a remarkable example of a gallery grave, stretching over 12 meters long. That means you could lie down almost four times across its length! One of the things that makes the Pierre Turquaise so special is the carvings found at its entrance. The two pillars of the trilithon, a structure consisting of two upright stones and a capstone, feature bas-reliefs. These carvings, believed to represent the Goddess of the Dead, are incredibly rare, with only seven other known examples in all of France. This goddess is a powerful symbol, a reminder of the cyclical nature of life and death that captivated the beliefs of these ancient people. It’s incredible to think that what we see today is only a fraction of the original structure. Sadly, the Pierre Turquaise has faced its fair share of challenges throughout history. In the 1800s, it was almost destroyed to make way for the expanding streets of Paris. Imagine those cobblestones being ripped from this ancient site! Thankfully, it was saved by the intervention of archaeologist Alexandre Hahn. More recently, in 1985, it was damaged by an explosion. The Pierre Turquaise stands as a testament to the enduring power of the past, a silent sentinel guarding the secrets of generations long gone.
