Do you hear that roar? That’s Piedra Playa, also called Playa del Castillo, flexing its muscles. This isn’t just any beach. This is a wild, untamed beauty on the west coast of Fuerteventura.

Piedra Playa sits just a kilometer south of El Cotillo. Locals once kept watch from Castillo El Toston, a fortress nearby. They guarded the north coast, always vigilant.

Getting here is an adventure. A dirt road leads you to the cliffs overlooking Piedra Playa. Park at the top. Then follow a gravel path down to the beach. Remember to bring everything you need. That trip back up is tiring.

Look around. You won’t find any bars or restaurants here. No sunbeds or umbrellas clutter the landscape. Piedra Playa remains wonderfully wild. It is untouched.

Most visitors come for the surf. Lifeguards are here during the summer, from July to October. But be warned. Like many west coast beaches, the currents are strong. Huge waves often crash here. Swimming can be dangerous.

But the landscape? Breathtaking. Spend half a day walking its length. Depending on the tide, lagoons may form. The water in these lagoons becomes surprisingly warm. Kids love to play here, but the difficult access might make it challenging for families.

Piedra Playa is a haven for watersports. Kitesurfers, surfers, and windsurfers flock here. The busiest months are summer, between July and October. There’s no surf school right on the beach. Check in El Cotillo before you head over.

Want calmer waters? Head north to Playa de la Concha or the lagoons.

Piedra Playa stretches about 1500 meters. It is framed by cliffs and covered in golden sand. But the sand shifts. Sometimes, rocks are exposed. Mother Nature constantly reshapes this beach.

Even if you don’t surf, watching the surfers is amazing. There is a great vantage point above the beach. It’s perfect for enjoying the sunset.

Piedra Playa offers parking, but be aware of safety. The beach isn’t usually crowded. It provides a peaceful escape. The views are stunning. Many come to watch the sunset. The rough waves attract surfers. Swimming is not recommended here.

El Cotillo has avoided mass tourism. It maintains a local feel. Explore the town’s traditional white fishermen’s houses. Stroll through the tiny alleys. Visit the local shops and cafes.

From Piedra Playa, you can discover the north track. It runs along the island’s shore. It connects El Cotillo to Corralejo. You will find remote beaches and volcanoes. There are great surf spots.

Soak in the wildness of Piedra Playa. It’s a place where nature’s power is on full display. Remember the shifting sands. The crashing waves. The stunning sunsets. This is Fuerteventura at its finest.
