What a view! Can you imagine almost 90% of Fuerteventura’s unique plants reside right here on the slopes of Pico de la Zarza? This majestic peak, the highest point on this incredible island, isn’t just a pretty face. It stands tall at 807 meters above sea level, part of the mighty Macizo de Jandía. This ridge splits the Jandía peninsula, creating two distinct landscapes. From this very spot, you can almost feel the wind that carries a sea of clouds, blanketing the peak for much of the year. These clouds, trapped by the peaks of the Jandía massif, hold a secret: they are a source of life. In 2016, special mist collectors were installed, capturing the precious water, gathering an impressive 6,500 liters per month. The slopes of Pico de la Zarza are a haven for bird watchers. Keep your eyes peeled for bustards, Ibiz, Barbary falcons, guirre, harriers, and the melodic Canary crow. You might even spot Canarian shrews, sleek lilies, scurrying Majorero Perenquen, hedgehogs, and the elusive Moorish squirrel. Pico de la Zarza is more than a mountain; it is a symbol of Fuerteventura’s natural wonders.
