Picture a bustling community in the late 1950s. Residents of Hechunyuan now Toa Payoh came together. They formed Poh Teck Siang Tng PTST. This was the humble beginning of the Phoh Teck Siang Tng Temple. The organization officially registered in 1961. Its first home a simple attap house at 108 Braddell Road.
The Phoh Teck Siang Tng Temple wasn’t always where it stands today. The original building underwent reconstruction from 1962 to 1965. It was acquired in 1975. After lengthy negotiations PTST relocated. They secured a 30-year lease in Hougang. This wasn’t just a move for PTST. Three other temples joined them. Hougang Twee Boey Teng Niang Temple Chang Tien Kong Temple and Zhong Tou Gong Temple. Together they built Tian De Temple a united temple. The new hall officially opened in 1985. Today PTST is actively fundraising to extend the site’s lease ensuring the temple’s continued presence in Hougang.
The Phoh Teck Siang Tng Temple’s history is one of resilience and community spirit. Despite relocation challenges PTST remained active. They consistently participated in community services. They donated to those less fortunate. This dedication speaks volumes about the temple’s values and its deep roots within the community. The temple also served as a Blue Cross Charitable Institution. Its original address on Braddell Road dates back to 1959. A cross on its facade further highlighted this charitable aspect.
