In 2016, the completion of Philosophicum II’s shell was celebrated. It marked a significant step in expanding the university’s facilities. The building provides much-needed space for the growing number of students.
The four-story building was erected in modular construction. It was completed within a year. This swift construction minimized disruption to campus life.
Inside Philosophicum II, you’ll find 1,700 square meters of space. This area accommodates 48 single offices, 39 double offices, and 12 triple offices. Meeting rooms and functional areas are also available. These include copy areas and storage. A central elevator ensures barrier-free access throughout the building.
Seven million euros were invested in Philosophicum II. Half of this sum came from the Hochschulpakt II. The other half came from the Stiftung Mainzer Universitätsfonds. This investment reflects the university’s commitment to providing quality resources.
The building primarily houses staff from social sciences, media, sports, philosophy, philology, history, and cultural studies. The Center for Teacher Education also has staff here. Before Philosophicum II, these departments were scattered across the campus.
The design of Philosophicum II includes flexible office spaces. Demountable walls allow for easy reconfiguration. This adaptability ensures the building meets changing needs.
University President Georg Krausch emphasized the necessity of Philosophicum II. He noted that the university managed the construction independently for the first time. This ensured the project’s timely completion.
Philosophicum II not only provides office space. It also strengthens the campus’s visual appeal. Its location along Jacob-Welder-Weg enhances the “Campusallee.” This improves the pedestrian entrance to the central cafeteria.
Despite the celebration surrounding Philosophicum II, challenges remain. Dekan Stephan Jolie pointed out that the older Philosophicum needs renovation. He humorously mentioned drafty windows and concerning cracks in support pillars.
