Before entering, you can already feel the history of this place. You can almost hear the echoes of the past. That is the magic of the Philippuskirche. This beautiful modern church, built in 1964, stands proudly in the Obergiesing district. It is a monument to faith and resilience, a testament to the strength of the community, and a fascinating window into the architectural styles of post-World War II Germany.

While it might not be as old as Munich’s iconic gothic cathedrals, the Philippuskirche has a story waiting to be told. Its story starts with the vision of two incredible architects: Franz Lichtblau and Johann Nepomuk Bauer. They envisioned a church that would fit into the contemporary landscape of their era. So, they chose to build a modern structure, with clean lines, a minimalist interior, and some eye-catching details that truly make it stand out.

As you step inside, you will be greeted by an impressive, contemporary space. The church is relatively small, but it is filled with unique and powerful details. The altar, designed by the sculptor Rolf Nida-Rüemelin, is a true work of art. He also created the pulpit, the baptistery, and the striking concrete frieze on the outside wall.

The Philippuskirche has a special connection to nature. The altar wall was created by artist Hubert Distler, inspired by a passage from the bible, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven (triangle) and on earth (cross) and under the earth (predella).” This quote speaks to the belief that God is present everywhere, including in our natural world.

The most impressive detail of the church, however, is its tower. It is 32 metres high, slim, and houses bells with a special sound. It is a real architectural marvel, designed to stand tall and proud above the city.

Today, the Philippuskirche serves as a vibrant hub for the community. It is a place where people come to connect, to celebrate, and to find solace. They share the same faith, the same history, and the same love for their city. So, let us celebrate this modern testament to faith and architectural ingenuity, the place where art and religion meet in a beautiful and unassuming balance.
