Tucked away on Piña Avenue in Santa Mesa, Manila, the Philippine Palyul Chang Chub Dhargye Dharma Center isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of Tibetan Buddhism in the Philippines. The Philippine Palyul Chang Chub Dhargye Dharma Center began humbly in 1992. It started in a small, one-story bungalow in Quezon City. Imagine the monks carefully carrying their precious shrine upstairs during Manila’s torrential typhoon season, the ground floor submerged in floodwater. That same shrine now greets visitors on the ground floor of the Philippine Palyul Chang Chub Dhargye Dharma Center. Flanking it are glass cabinets protecting the Kangyur and Tengyur. These are the translated words of Buddha Shakyamuni and commentaries by ancient Buddhist masters. They are wrapped in yellow cloth, whispering stories of centuries past. The Philippine Palyul Chang Chub Dhargye Dharma Center’s current three-story structure allows for a greater range of activities. The third floor houses the main prayer hall. This sacred space has witnessed countless ceremonies since 2008. Picture the golden shrine. It holds three central figures: Buddha Shakyamuni, Buddha Amitabha, and the Medicine Buddha. Below them reside another trio: Buddha Shakyamuni, Chenrezig Bodhisattva (or Kuanyin), and Guru Rinpoche (or Padmasambhava). The walls are adorned with vibrant thangka paintings. These depict various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Below the shrine, tormas represent the pure lands of different Buddhas and Dharma protectors of the Palyul lineage. To the right stands the throne of His Holiness Penor Rinpoche III, the center’s founder. He established the Namdroling Monastery in South India, a vibrant community of 4,000 monks and nuns. The Philippine Palyul Chang Chub Dhargye Dharma Center isn’t just a place of worship.
