Established in 1901, the Philippine Normal University stands as a testament to the enduring power of education. This institution, right here before us, wasn’t always the grand university you see today. It began humbly as the Philippine Normal School, born from Act No. 74 of the Philippine Commission. The American teachers, the Thomasites, were the first to guide aspiring educators within its walls. The Philippine Normal University’s initial focus was a two-year general secondary education program. By 1928, it evolved into a junior college. This growth continued, and in 1949, through Republic Act 416, it transformed into the Philippine Normal College, offering a four-year Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education program. The Graduate School followed in 1953, solidifying the college’s commitment to advanced educational studies. A pivotal moment in the Philippine Normal University’s history came in 1972. Republic Act 6515 enabled the college to award Doctor of Education and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. This marked a significant expansion in its academic offerings, catering to a wider range of educational professionals. Philippine Normal University didn’t limit its reach to Manila. It established branches in Agusan del Sur, Isabela, and Negros Occidental. Furthermore, it played a crucial role as the Curriculum Development Center for Communication Arts. This center developed textbooks and teacher manuals used nationwide, impacting countless students and educators across the Philippines. Finally, on December 26, 1991, under Republic Act 7168, the Philippine Normal College officially became the Philippine Normal University. This university, designated the National Center for Teacher Education by Republic Act 9647, continues its legacy of shaping the future of education in the Philippines.
