A beating heart a symbol of life. That’s what greets you at the Philippine Heart Center. This isn’t just a hospital. It’s a testament to hope. A place where countless lives have been mended.

Established on February 14 1975 the Philippine Heart Center opened its doors. It was created by Presidential Decree No 673. President Ferdinand E Marcos signed the decree into law. The center quickly became a beacon of hope for Filipinos. It specialized in treating heart ailments. The hospital offered rooms for both paying and charity patients.

Initially known as the Philippine Heart Center for Asia. It later changed its name to its current form in 1975. Imelda Francisco was the first patient admitted. This was on April 14 1975.The hospital’s location in Quezon City made it easily accessible. Yet it was also part of what some called the Marcoses’ edifice complex. This architectural style reflects a particular era in Philippine history.

The Philippine Heart Center attracted renowned cardiovascular specialists. Christiaan Barnard Denton Cooley Donald Effler and Charles Bailey all practiced there. Their presence elevated the Center’s prestige internationally. Avenilo P Aventura the first director was a pioneer. He performed many groundbreaking operations. These included the first successful renal transplantation in 1970. The first CABG in 1972 was another significant achievement. He also developed and implanted the first ASEAN bioprosthesis. This was the PHCA porcine valve.

The Philippine Heart Center’s impact extends beyond its walls. It conducts regular training programs. This ensures that medical professionals continue to receive high quality education. The Center also boasts of advanced medical technology. It consistently admits more than 14000 patients every year. This includes over 3300 heart surgeries. Its reputation as one of Asia’s busiest congenital heart surgery centers speaks for itself.

In 2014 the Philippine Heart Center received a significant accolade. Accreditation Canada International awarded it the Qmentum International Gold Accreditation. This was for excellence in hospital practices and safety. The award spanned from August 2014 to 2017. The Philippine Heart Center’s Brutalist architecture is striking. It was designed by Filipino architect Jorge Ramos and co-founded by Dr Ludgerio D Torres. The construction cost was nearly US$50 million.

More recently in June 2024 President Bongbong Marcos appointed Avenilo Jun L Aventura Jr MD as the PHC’s Executive Director. This continues the legacy of excellence established by his father.

The Philippine Heart Center isn’t just bricks and mortar. It is a story of dedication perseverance and hope. A place where lives are saved. A place where hearts are healed. A place that embodies the strength and resilience of the Filipino spirit. This is more than a hospital. It’s a national treasure.
