Gazing up at the Philipp Apian Bust, one might wonder about the man immortalized in bronze. This bust commemorates Philipp Apian, a remarkable figure in Bavarian history. Philipp Apian, born Philipp Bienewitz or Bennewitz in 1531, was a mathematician, physician, cartographer, and heraldist. He was the son of Peter Apian, another prominent mathematician and astronomer. Apian’s life was intertwined with the Bavarian Dukes, particularly Duke Albrecht V. At just seven years old, young Philipp began his education alongside the future Duke. This connection would prove crucial later in his life.

In 1554, Duke Albrecht V commissioned Apian to create a comprehensive map of Bavaria. This project was a monumental undertaking. Apian meticulously surveyed the land, traveling across Upper and Lower Bavaria, the Upper Palatinate, and even parts of Salzburg and Eichstätt. He employed cutting-edge techniques for the time, using astronomical measurements and a form of graphical triangulation. After years of work, the “Große Karte,” a massive map measuring roughly 6 by 6 meters, was completed in 1563. This remarkably detailed map was a testament to Apian’s skill and dedication. It remained a unique piece, housed in the Residence library, until its destruction centuries later.

The Philipp Apian Bust reminds us of the “Bairische Landtafeln,” created in 1566. These were smaller-scale woodcuts based on the “Große Karte.” Apian collaborated with artist Jost Amman to create these 24 detailed maps. They provided a more accessible version of his work, allowing for wider distribution. The Landtafeln remained remarkably accurate for their time and were even used by Napoleon during his Bavarian campaign.

Apian’s expertise wasn’t limited to maps. He also constructed a terrestrial globe for Duke Albrecht V in 1576, displayed in the Antiquarium of the Munich Residence. He also compiled a collection of Bavarian coats of arms and worked on a detailed description of Bavaria, the “Descriptio Bavariae.” Sadly, this work was unfinished at the time of his death in 1589. Apian’s contributions to cartography, mathematics, and the understanding of Bavaria are significant. This bronze bust serves as a lasting tribute to his legacy. As you look upon the Philipp Apian Bust, remember the man who shaped our understanding of Bavaria.
