The name “Rogers Park” might sound familiar. It’s a neighborhood in Chicago. But did you know the neighborhood got its name from a man? Philip Rogers, a farmer who settled in the area in the 1830s, was an early pioneer. He built a cabin on Ridge Avenue and bought a tract of land. Eventually, he owned about 1,600 acres! He farmed much of this land, and his son-in-law, Patrick Touhy, inherited his holdings. They started developing the land in the 1870s. In 1878, a village was incorporated and named after Philip Rogers, and in 1893, the neighborhood became part of Chicago. Today, the neighborhood is bustling with life. And right in the heart of Rogers Park, at 7345 North Washtenaw Avenue, stands Philip Rogers Elementary School, named in the farmer’s honor. The school serves over 700 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. And it’s a true reflection of its surroundings, filled with students from diverse backgrounds. The school is more than just a place of learning; it’s a community center. It’s where children learn, grow, and become valuable members of the neighborhood.
