Remember that elegant building soaring above Manila’s skyline? That’s the AIA Tower formerly known as the Philamlife Tower. It’s a skyscraper with a story.
The AIA Philippines wasn’t always a high-rise giant. It started in 1947 as Philam Life. Cornelius Vander Starr and Earl Carroll founded it. They built a legacy in insurance. Philam Life grew quickly. It became a major player in the Philippine insurance market.
For many years Philam Life’s headquarters was a different building altogether. It was the Philam Life Building in Ermita. Architect Carlos Arguelles designed it. The building was a marvel of mid-century modern architecture. Its auditorium the Philam Life Theater was renowned. It had exceptional acoustics. World-famous musicians performed there. Renata Tebaldi even sang there. Her voice cracked in one performance but the audience loved it. The theater hosted the Manila Symphony Orchestra and many other musical events. It was a cultural hub.
However the Philam Life Building had a sad ending. In 2013 Philam Life moved its headquarters. The Ermita site was sold. Demolition began in 2020. The magnificent Philam Life Theater was lost. Only the memories and the legacy of the incredible acoustics remain. The carved narra murals were saved thankfully. They are now at the National Museum of Fine Arts.
But the story of AIA Philippines continues. Today the AIA Tower in Makati stands tall. It is a testament to the enduring success of this insurance giant. It’s a modern marvel a fitting symbol of a company that has weathered storms and emerged stronger. It is a symbol of financial strength a legacy of the past. A glimpse of a future that is brighter still.
