Built in 1930 the Phare de Mourepiane once stood proudly near the Estaque district of Marseille. Its light a beacon for sailors. Imagine the scene. The waves crash against the rocks. The wind howls a lonely tune. The lighthouse a sturdy sentinel against the relentless sea. It wasn’t always this way. Long before the 1930 structure. Mourepiane was a strategic point. A lookout tower stood there as early as 1289. Its name evolving over centuries from Morris de Morropiano to Marrupiana. The location also housed a military battery. The area’s importance continued to grow with the expansion of Marseille’s busy port. The need for improved maritime signaling increased. The original lighthouse was eventually replaced. This wasn’t the first time. A previous lighthouse was built on this site centuries ago. The Phare de Mourepiane shone its light for decades. It emitted three flashes every fifteen seconds. The light beam split into three distinct sectors. White red and green guiding ships safely to port. But time marches on. By the 1960s the lighthouse was deactivated. Its purpose fulfilled. A new era had begun. No longer a beacon it became a part of private property. The Phare de Mourepiane stands now mostly forgotten. Yet it is still a striking symbol. A reminder of the constant evolution of Marseille’s coastal history. A tangible link to the city’s vibrant past. Although rarely open for visits it remains a cherished emblem of the Estaque neighbourhood. A silent witness to the seafarers and soldiers who once called this site home. The Phare de Mourepiane a testament to Marseille’s maritime legacy.
