A majestic bronze horse stands before you. This is the Phar Lap Statue. It’s a tribute to one of Australia’s greatest racehorses. Phar Lap won 37 of his 51 races. He even won a race on each day of the 1930 Flemington spring carnival. That includes the Melbourne Cup. He carried more weight than weight-for-age allowed. Amazing.

The Phar Lap Statue is at Flemington Racecourse. It commemorates the bicentenary of Australia. The Victorian Racing Club and the Victorian Government commissioned it. Peter Corlett a Melbourne sculptor created this magnificent piece. It was unveiled on October 27 1988. The Hon N B Trezise MP Minister for Sport and Recreation did the honours.

Phar Lap’s life was full of drama. Criminals tried to shoot him before the 1930 Melbourne Cup. They failed. He went on to win. Sadly he died mysteriously in California in 1932. He was only five years old. This happened days after winning an international race in Mexico.
