Why is this barn called PfisterScheune? Here, in Alfter, stands a building with more than just walls. The PfisterScheune gallery is located at Nettekovener Strasse 60. It is not in Bonn, but in Alfter in the direct neighborhood.

Bonn itself began as a small Germanic settlement around 30 BC. The Romans then established a military settlement between 13 BC and 9 BC. This settlement was called Bonna.

Over time, Bonn grew into an important city. In 1244, it was granted a town charter. Bonn became the home of the prince-elector of Cologne. The city resisted the Reformation in the 16th century. From 1597, it served as the capital for the Electorate of Cologne.

Though the Thirty Years’ War brought destruction to many German cities, Bonn remained largely intact. However, in 1689, during the War of the League of Augsburg, Bonn faced significant challenges.

Joseph Clemens von Bayern initiated an ambitious building plan. His successor, Clemens August, continued this work. He built the Electoral Palace, the Altes Rathaus, and the Poppelsdorf Palace.

Bonn experienced the Age of Enlightenment under Max Franz von Habsburg. He founded a university and developed the city’s southern part into a spa town. During this time, Ludwig van Beethoven gave his earliest concerts.

In 1794, French rule began in Bonn. The city lost its university and the church lost powers. In 1815, the Rhineland came under Prussian control. A new university was founded, attracting scholars like Karl Heinrich Marx.

After World War One, Bonn was occupied by Anglo-Canadian forces. Then, it came under French control again from 1920. The inter-war period was a time of unrest. During the 1930s, the Jewish community faced persecution. Allied bombing in World War Two destroyed the city centre.

In 1946, Bonn became part of North Rhine-Westphalia. It was named the capital of West Germany in 1949. After German unification in 1990, Bonn lost its capital status. However, it retained some government roles as the Bundesstadt.
