Before you stands the Pfarrkirche Schellenberg a testament to faith and architectural evolution. This isn’t just any church. It’s a story etched in stone and stained glass.

The original Pfarrkirche Schellenberg a smaller simpler structure was built between 1855 and 1856. It was funded entirely by private donations a remarkable feat of community spirit. Consecrated in 1858 it served the people of Schellenberg until 1972. That year it was demolished. It had become too small and unsafe. Interestingly the construction of the original church coincided with the building of the Schellenberg Monastery nearby. A connection of faith and community.

The Pfarrkirche Schellenberg you see today is a marvel of modern architecture. Designed by Eduard Ladner it was built between 1960 and 1963. This building won first prize in Liechtenstein’s first international architectural competition. It’s considered a milestone in modern Liechtenstein architecture. Its clean lines and minimalist design are a departure from its predecessor. Yet it retains a sacred aura.

The interior is simple yet striking. The altar a creation of Georg Malin is made of marble. The design is purposeful. It avoids excessive ornamentation. This focuses attention on the sacrament at its heart. The crucifix features an historic corpus from Schellenberg itself a tangible link to the past. Other notable features are the golden tabernacle and the ambo also crafted by Georg Malin.

The church’s stained-glass windows are masterpieces. Designed by Fritz Weigner they are unusually placed and boldly colored. These windows punctuate the rectangular space adding splashes of light and color. Even the placement of the baptismal font is deliberate. It sits near both the entrance and the altar symbolizing the journey of faith.

The Pfarrkirche Schellenberg’s tower houses five bells cast in 1961 by the Erdinger Glockengießerei Czudnochowsky. Each bell bears a dedication. These bells ring out over the village marking moments of celebration and reflection. The organ above the sacristy a Zeilhuber creation from 1963 has been carefully maintained. It has even undergone renovations in 2008.

So here we stand before the Pfarrkirche Schellenberg. It’s a story of faith community and the enduring power of architecture. A quiet building holding centuries of stories within its walls. A place of worship a place of history a place of peace.
