Gazing at Pfarrkirche Liebfrauen, one might initially overlook its unusual placement. This neo-Romanesque church sits atop a raised ground floor, a unique feature for a sacred space. Pfarrkirche Liebfrauen is located near the Plagwitz train station in Leipzig-Lindenau. Originally called St. Marienkirche, it was consecrated in 1908. Designed by local architect Anton Käppler, the church reflects the population boom and influx of Catholics to Leipzig in the late 19th century. The initial construction focused on practical needs. A school and parish house were built before the church itself, highlighting the community’s priorities. The church boasts two low, square towers on its western facade and a main tower at the southeast end. The western towers reach 33.5 meters, while the main tower stands taller at 45.5 meters. The church’s interior has seen several transformations. Initially decorated with vibrant depictions of the Seven Joys of Mary, the Pfarrkirche Liebfrauen later received a more modern aesthetic. In the 1930s, renowned architect Rudolf Schwarz led renovations, introducing a Werktagskapelle (weekday chapel) and a simpler color scheme. The colorful side windows provide a striking contrast to the white interior. These windows survived World War II thanks to their removal for safekeeping. Inside, the main altar is a block of reddish-brown marble, accompanied by six candleholders, a crucifix, and the Easter candle. Two ambos (lecterns) of gray marble flank the altar. A seven-branched enameled chandelier from 1980 hangs above, the sole adornment in the otherwise unadorned apse. In the left aisle, a large mosaic of Mary graces the wall. The right aisle houses the Sakramentsaltar (Sacrament Altar), with a tabernacle by Ludwig Gies. Two tapestries with angels flank this altar. A life-size statue of St. Philip Neri stands to the right. Pfarrkirche Liebfrauen has been home to the Oratory of St. Philip Neri since 1930. The priests of this community have overseen the parish ever since, shaping the liturgical life of the church. The Schuke organ, installed in 1972, adds to the rich musical heritage of Pfarrkirche Liebfrauen. Interestingly, the church’s original bronze bells were melted down for war efforts, replaced by steel bells in 1957.
