High in the Rätikon Alps, perched on the Bettlerjoch, stands the Pfälzerhütte. Can you imagine a mountain hut straddling two countries? The Pfälzerhütte sits right on the border of Austria and Switzerland, yet firmly on Liechtenstein soil. This historic hut, at 2108 meters, offers a welcome respite for hikers, especially those tackling the challenging Liechtenstein Panorama Trail. The Pfälzerhütte is an important stop on Stage 3 of this trail, a demanding hike with significant elevation gain. The trail to the Pfälzerhütte begins in Steg and winds its way up through diverse landscapes. It passes blooming meadows, climbs to summits like Chrüppel and Wanghöhe, and traverses the dramatic ridge of Goldlochspitz before finally descending to the hut. The Pfälzerhütte is open from mid-June to mid/end of October. It provides not only shelter but also hearty meals. Hikers can enjoy a three-course vegetarian dinner and a substantial breakfast buffet. Built in 1928 by the Association of Palatine Sections of the German and Austrian Alpine Clubs, the Pfälzerhütte carries a rich history. Originally a gift from the Alpgenossenschaft Gritsch, the hut’s construction took just 113 days. World War II brought a period of abandonment and plunder. The hut was left in a desolate state until the Liechtenstein Alpine Club took over its trusteeship in 1946. After extensive renovations, the Pfälzerhütte reopened in 1950. It continues to serve as a vital hub for hikers exploring the stunning Rätikon Alps, offering comfortable lodging and a warm welcome. It’s a testament to resilience, perched high amidst breathtaking scenery, offering a haven for adventurers seeking the beauty of the mountains.
