“Echoes of ancient mythology resonate here.” I think to myself, standing before Petros Sculpture in Seattle. Petros, a magnificent sculpture, stands as a testament to Seattle’s vibrant art scene. It reflects the city’s commitment to enriching public spaces with inspiring works.

The Seattle Convention Center, a key player in this cultural enrichment, established one of the nation’s first public art programs. It provides an environment that elevates the experience of every visitor. Since the Center’s opening in 1988, this program, founded by Phyllis Lamphere, has been a beloved feature. It showcases over 100 works of art.

Initially, art was integrated into the building design, thanks to the State’s Percent for the Arts program. The Seattle Convention Center has since cultivated an ever-evolving collection. It is readily accessible to the public in the Arch building, free of charge.

The collection expanded further with the Summit building. The collection promotes the Seattle Convention Center’s connection to local communities and neighborhoods. It draws inspiration from the Pacific Northwest’s diverse cultures.

The Summit art program features several key elements. These include freestanding artworks commissioned specifically for the project. Artistic elements have been thoughtfully integrated into the architecture. Dozens of existing studio works were acquired for exhibition. The Center plans to continue enhancing Summit with artwork loans and Art Foundation donations in the future.

The permanent collection in the Arch building comprises gifts and long-term loans. These come from artists, galleries, governmental entities, corporations, foundations, and private collectors. Among the represented artists are Alfredo Arreguin and Hilda Morris. Also represented are Alden Mason, Jenny Holzer, and James Washington, Jr.

The Summit collection showcases the work of 23 commissioned artists. They were selected through open, invitational, or limited call processes. These artists include Maikoiyo Alley-Barnes and Romson Regarde Bustillo. Others are Kate Clark, Claire Cowie, and Kimberly Deriana. In addition to these commissioned artists, 37 artists are featured in the Studio Works subset of the collection.

Rotating exhibitions display the diverse works of local artists. They create an ever-changing tapestry of talent. These shows are booked approximately two years in advance, following a screening process with the Seattle Convention Center’s Art Advisors. Since 1991, nearly 200 exhibitions have graced the Phyllis Lamphere Gallery on Level 2 of the Arch building.

Waterfront Park also plays a role in Seattle’s art landscape. It showcases a dynamic collection of public art. This highlights Seattle’s cultural richness and diversity. Permanent installations, like statues and fountains, enhance the park’s ambiance. They create spaces for reflection and inspiration. Temporary art pieces by local artists complement these. They are organized in partnership with Friends of Waterfront Park. These temporary artworks offer opportunities for local artists to showcase their work. They celebrate the area’s traditions and cultural tapestry.

As you stand before Petros, remember the Seattle Convention Center’s commitment to art. It reflects the city’s vibrant culture and community. This place is a testament to the power of art. It inspires reflection and connection.
