Peterskirche’s journey began humbly in 1507 near one of Leipzig’s old city gates, in a quarter known as Petersviertel. After the Reformation, the original church was abandoned in 1539, serving as a storage space and even barracks during the tumultuous Thirty Years’ War. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, it was revived in 1712, resuming its sacred duties until the burgeoning congregation necessitated a grander sanctuary. In 1876, the decision was made to build a new church. A design competition ensued, attracting entries from eighty architects across Germany. August Hartel and Constantin Lipsius emerged victorious, their vision giving rise to the Peterskirche we admire today. The foundation stone was laid in 1882, and the church was consecrated on December 27, 1885. Peterskirche’s story, however, is not without its trials. The ravages of World War II left the church severely damaged, its roof destroyed, and its interior scarred. Yet, the spirit of Peterskirche remained unbroken. Through the 1970s and beyond, restoration efforts breathed new life into the structure. The church’s rich exterior, adorned with stained-glass windows and a grand western portal, regained its former glory. The interior, though now devoid of fixed pews, offers a versatile space. This adaptability allows Peterskirche to host a diverse array of events, from traditional services to concerts, theater performances, exhibitions, and even gatherings of the Wave-Gotik-Treffen.
