Who wouldn’t be intrigued by a house with such a colourful past? Welcome to Petersham Lodge a place steeped in history and brimming with fascinating tales. Right here on River Lane in Petersham stands Petersham Lodge a Grade II listed building. It’s more than just a pretty face though. This early 18th-century residence was originally built for Catherine Douglas Duchess of Queensberry a woman of considerable influence.
But Petersham Lodge’s story doesn’t begin there. Years before its construction the lodge fell into disrepair. Matthew Banckes a skilled builder resurrected it for Laurence Hyde the 1st Earl of Rochester in 1691-92. It then passed through notable hands. William Stanhope the 2nd Earl of Harrington owned it until his death in 1779. Thomas Pitt the 1st Baron Camelford then acquired the lease and later bought the property outright from the Crown. Can you imagine the political maneuvering required for such a purchase? An act of Parliament was needed!
The renowned architect John Soane undertook repairs and redecoration in 1781. His touch surely added a layer of elegance. In 1790 Petersham Lodge passed into the ownership of the Duke of Clarence later to become William IV. James Hamilton Viscount Hamilton was born within these walls in 1786. What a lineage this house boasts!
Fast forward to the latter half of the 20th century. The Rolling Stones’ long-time financial manager Prince Rupert Loewenstein purchased Petersham Lodge in 1987 for about £2 million. He resided there until his death in 2014. This is a significant chapter in Petersham Lodge’s story a connection to the world of rock and roll.
