Burien’s Peter Western Bridge stands here. It is more than just concrete and steel. It represents resilience and community connection.

The Peter Western Bridge story begins long before its reopening on December 21, 2020. Let’s rewind to 1950. The original Peter Western Bridge was built. For over half a century, it served Burien. It connected north Burien to commuter highways.

Now, picture the scene in February 2017. Weeks of relentless wet weather had taken their toll. Severe erosion occurred beneath the Peter Western Bridge. The bridge columns were undermined. The bridge was declared structurally deficient. The Peter Western Bridge was closed for safety.

The city acted swiftly. Burien secured emergency funding. The old bridge was demolished in May 2017.

But who was Peter Western? Peter H. Western was born in Kent, WA, in 1883. He was from a pioneer family. They settled in the Duwamish Valley. Peter was a farmer. He also owned a battery repair store in Boulevard Heights. He died in 1954. The reason the bridge was named after him remains a mystery.

The Peter Western Bridge project was completed in two phases. Phase one demolished the old bridge. Stormwater facilities were stabilized temporarily. Phase two brought the new Peter Western Bridge. Permanent stormwater repairs were made. The streambed was restored.

Imagine the construction in early 2019. Crews worked diligently. The new Peter Western Bridge was taking shape. The Peter Western Bridge was designed to be stronger and safer.

Fast forward to December 2020. The new Peter Western Bridge opened. It was a positive end to a challenging year. The Peter Western Bridge is a vital connector. It keeps Burien moving. Over 10,000 vehicles travel across the Peter Western Bridge daily.

The Peter Western Bridge stands as a testament to Burien’s spirit. It is a reminder that even after damage, communities can rebuild. The Peter Western Bridge connects people and places. It carries the legacy of Peter Western. It paves the way for the future.
