Did Peter von Scholten ever imagine his final resting place would be here, in Copenhagen’s Assistens Cemetery? This unassuming mausoleum holds the remains of a man who wrestled with the weight of history in the Danish West Indies. Peter von Scholten, the last Governor-General of the Danish West Indies, a name forever intertwined with the abolition of slavery in those islands. He was born in Denmark in 1784 and began his military career at a young age, eventually serving in the West Indies. Peter von Scholten rose through the ranks, becoming Governor-General in 1827. He governed with a patriarchal hand, implementing reforms to ease the burden on enslaved people. These included establishing schools and granting property rights. However, Peter von Scholten initially opposed the immediate emancipation of all children born to enslaved mothers, fearing unrest. His fears seemed confirmed when a rebellion erupted on St. Croix in 1848. In response, Peter von Scholten took the decisive step, proclaiming emancipation for all enslaved people in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848. Upon his return to Denmark, von Scholten faced accusations of mismanagement. He endured a trial and was initially denied his pension. Though eventually acquitted, this ordeal marked the end of his career. Peter von Scholten died in Altona in 1854, a man whose life was both celebrated and condemned. He left a complex legacy, marked by the fight for freedom in a world clinging to the shackles of the past. His story, a blend of power, compassion, and controversy, continues to resonate within these quiet walls.
