Take a moment to imagine the hustle and bustle of a bygone era. Picture cobblestone streets lined with quaint houses, each with its own unique tale to tell. You are standing in the heart of the Old Town, a unique open-air museum in Aarhus. This is Den Gamle By, a living testament to the evolution of Danish life and architecture, and it all started with a single, visionary man.

His name was Peter Holm. A man with a thirst for history and a deep passion for preserving the past. He was a teacher by trade, but his true calling was to bring history to life.

It all started with the 1909 Aarhus National Exhibition. Holm played a key role in building a historical showcase. Among the exhibits was Den gamle Borgmestergård, the old mayor’s mansion, which captured the hearts of the visitors.

Holm didn’t want this enchanting exhibit to disappear. He knew its importance for the future. So, he set out on a mission to keep the mansion for Aarhus. He persevered, overcoming resistance and challenges from the established museum world.

He was deeply impressed by the old mayor’s mansion. It represented a bygone era, filled with stories of ordinary lives. He envisioned a place where people could step back in time and experience the history of Denmark, not through dry exhibits, but as a living, breathing world.

In 1914, the mansion was finally moved to its current location in the Botanical Garden. More historical buildings soon followed, each with its own rich history.

Peter Holm had a special talent for creating a living museum. He didn’t just display the houses; he filled them with life. He brought in furniture, household objects, and even clothing from different periods. He wanted visitors to experience the past, to smell the bread baking in the ovens, to hear the children playing in the streets.

Holm dedicated his life to building Den Gamle By. He passionately believed that understanding the past was essential for building a better future. He is considered the father of this exceptional museum that tells the story of a nation through its architecture, furnishings, and spirit.

He lived to see Den Gamle By grow into one of Scandinavia’s most treasured open-air museums. Today, it stands as a lasting reminder of his vision and a testament to his dedication to preserving Danish heritage.
